Natural Soap Vs Commercial Soap: Can You Spot the Difference?

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

If you are not aware of how soap is made and the key differences between handmade natural soap and commercial soap, you may not realize the benefits of natural soap. Natural soap can often seem pricier than commercial soap available at the corner store. However, you must take into account the sheer amount of care and attention that goes into each bar of natural soap and the benefits that come from using all-natural ingredients. It is definitely worth the small extra you are paying for! With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the differences between the two types of soap.

Ingredients applied

Commercial soaps are generally less expensive and more readily available than handmade natural soaps. But do you know what is inside? Check the ingredients list on the next bar of commercial soap you pick up and consider how many of the terms are familiar to you and how many aren’t. Commercial soap typically includes various additives, preservatives, artificial ingredients and chemicals that make the bar last longer. Most commercial soaps are detergents and masqueraded as soaps with lathering agents to produce foam. All these can irritate the skin, especially for young children or family members with sensitive skin, causing skin conditions such as dermatitis or eczema. In opposition, natural soaps contain healthy ingredients that are kind to your skin. For more information about natural soap, Click here to find out more from the blogs.

With Glycerine?

The soap-making process creates an awesome natural by-product called “Glycerine”, a humectant that moisturizes your skin. It is a precious emollient that softens and maintains water balance by attracting moisture to your skin. This gem is well preserved inside the natural soaps for you. But commercial manufacturers remove the glycerine to use in other more profitable products like lotions and creams. Their removal results in hardened textures and has no benefits to your skin.

Environmentally conscious

Commercial bar soap and liquid body wash use a variety of chemicals & preservatives that can hurt our skin and also our environment. Read the label and see what you are washing down the drain every day to our ocean. Compare the amount of packaging used for liquid soap and you’ll notice that most natural handmade soap uses much less packaging, many natural soap artisans try to use recycled materials and minimal packaging which is easier to be recycled rather than liquid soap plastic bottles. Kanhode soaps are wrapped with washing cloth and recycled paper banners to present a second life of the materials.

Natural soap generally costs more than commercial detergent bars. But the difference is these soap bars are actually good for your skin.
